The Trail to Oregon is an amazing musical. The musical follows the story of one family trying to get to Oregon. They aren’t lucky enough to get there without a hitch, between a rotten salesman and the Bandit King they struggle to get their whole family there in one piece. The cast is made up of six people; Jaime Lyn Beatty (Daughter), Jeff Blim (Father), Corey Dorris (Grandpa/Cleetus Jones), Lauren Lopez (Son), Joey Richter (McDoon/Everyone Else), and Rachael Soglin (Mother). The musical is based upon the old computer game The Oregon Trail. The writers were Jeff Blim, Brian Holden, Matt Lang and Nick Lang.
The show is funny, if a bit crass at times, but there is a fair amount of cursing. It is available on YouTube for free, the creators uploaded it themselves so it isn’t a bootleg. The songs are catchy and hilarious. The entire time I watched it I giggled basically nonstop. The cast did a phenomenal job, they had me immersed the entire time. The characters were well developed and their character arcs are amazing. The small cast really did a great job differentiating between the characters they played. The musical was filmed in Chicago. The plot was not super complex but suited the show. The interactions between characters is what really stole the show for me. It also had some LGBTQ+ representation, it isn’t lot but it is there.
The set was pretty bare bones, but it worked with the show. The musical is a comedy, but there are a few moments that are emotional. The show is amazing and you can watch it for the low low price of free. The musical The Trail to Oregon is a solid five stars for me.
