The 2019 film “Beautiful day in the neighborhood”, is a drama documentary commemorating the relationship between Fred Rogers (played by Tom Hanks) and a journalist he becomes acquainted with named Tom Junod.  The story doesn’t reveal much about Mr. Rogers, but Tom Junod, who in the film is named Lloyd Vogel (played by Matthew Rhys) plays a writer for Esquire magazine in 1998. Lloyd had a history of writing very negative stories, so he is asked to profile Mr.Rogers to help fix his bad reputation.

Lloyd reluctantly travels to Pittsburgh to visit the set of “Mr.Rogers Neighborhood,” where Fred is a puppeteer and  teaches children about their emotions and how to react to them. After waiting patiently for the show to cut, Lloyd finally gets a short time to interview. Fred points out a bruise on Lloyd’s face, revealing his short temper with his father, Jerry Vogel (played by Chris Cooper). As the story continues more and more unfortunate events occur involving Lloyd’s family relationships.

Mr. Rogers continuously insists on inviting Lloyd to meet with him over the following weeks. Lloyd grows an attachment to the uplifting and generous spirit of Mr.Rogers and is taught many important life lessons. Lloyds Esquire article “Can you say…Hero?” becomes famous and successful story.

This movie is a family feel good film for all ages. Elisha Stutzman, english teacher at Highland says “I liked how nostalgic it was… It was very different than expected because of the focus is on the reporter rather than Mr. Rogers, you get to see him through a different lense rather than a children’s perspective.” Stutzman says she would recommend to watch the film, it was very “sweet and heartwarming.”

The movie “A beautiful a day in the neighborhood” is a top hit for any adults who grew up watching Mr. Rogers neighborhood or want a “feel good” experience. As you observe the story of Lloyd and his transformation led by Fred and his uplifting personality you leave the theater with a more positive outlook on life. This film is enjoyable for all ages, including teenagers and children. Anyone can connect with the characters and their experiences.
