Currently, at Highland High School there is one and only one foreign language option, Spanish. Other High schools like Poky and Century have language options like German, Japanese or French. Highland’s offerings are comparatively lackluster with only Spanish as the sole option. Spanish is a good language to learn, as it is the second most spoken language in the United States and the fourth most spoken language in the world. By 2050 it is possible that the USA could have more Spanish speakers within its borders than anywhere else in the world.

This doesn’t mean that other languages like German, Japanese or French shouldn’t be offered though. There are many benefits to learning multiple languages, such as boosting brain power, sharpening decision making, and improving memory. Also, when you are applying for jobs, being bilingual can put you over another person with similar credentials but who only speaks one language. Learning more languages will also help you understand other cultures better.

When Mr. Carlson was asked what foreign language options he would like to have at Highland, he said Arabic, Chinese, German, sign language, and Shoshone. Shoshone, being a Native American language and not widely spoken would be interesting to have and could be impressive on a resume as well as increase our understanding of a culture that lives among us.

Mandarin Chinese is the most spoken language in the world, with 1.1 billion speakers. Mandarin would be a good option, as it is so widely spoken. German is the second most spoken language in Europe, making it a good option for anyone who wants to travel in Europe. Even if traveling Europe isn’t in your plans, it is still good to learn a new language. Arabic is another interesting option, as it is a very difficult language. It is widely spoken in the Middle East, obviously, and could provide another very interesting challenge.

Sign Language is a good option to learn. Sign language is very unique and would be a very good thing to learn if you ever come into contact with someone who communicates with sign language. All in all, the foreign language options at Highland are very lackluster and more language options would be very beneficial to students.
