Students cheer as the new teachers dance.

With over 1600 students, our gym was packed to capacity with many students still out in the hallway. It is the start of the new year with the traditional welcome-back assembly. The seniors won the class battles, but the teachers won the speed-scavenger hunt. The new teachers ran through the welcome tunnel and wowed us with their dance moves. Mr. Alix Van Noy took home the prize of Highland’s Favorite new-teacher dancer with his sweet moves.  The Lassies welcomed in the year with the traditional Highlander dance which has likely been performed for every student body since 1963.  One of our new teachers, Mr. Mark Van Orden, English, graduated from Highland in 1996 and felt like he was being transported back to his own opening day assemblies as a student. Our award-winning cheerleaders impressed the crowd with their routines and stunts. And there was a new competition with some speedy mattress surfing.  Welcome back faculty, staff, and students.
