I am going to make the assumption that if you are reading this, you are a student. Knowing this, you are probably wondering about the decisions our district makes, as well as government spending and its attentiveness to our schools. Being a student, you are also probably affected by these decisions daily, whether you realize it or not. These decisions truly shape your future as well as the futures of those around you.

Roaming the halls of Highland, or any American school for that matter, you will notice the shabby conditions of the lockers, the cracked paint, etcetera. However, this does not say anything at all about how the school functions, and as we have all learned, wealth is not a direct display of intellect and functioning. You will notice as well that most classrooms are decorated with memorabilia and symbols of the teacher’s personality, which gives the classroom a more personal feel.

You begin to zone out and think about how, if at all, the school system gives freedom to students and eases them into learning before shoving them into the real world. I mean, seriously, at the age of 18, people cannot even go to the bathroom without permission, and then they just get thrown into the real world. That real world is a world of quotas, not attendance, and grades dependant not on behavior, but if you successfully completed the task with adequate performance. This is also evident in the very true argument your friend gave, saying that “You know the school system is screwed up when it’s not about learning anymore, it’s about passing.”

Knowing all this, you are probably thinking about the potential our school system has in regards to the way it manages and prepares students. Despite this, no matter the potential, if it goes unchanged and untapped it will never become what it has the ability to be without the right person in charge. It needs to cater more to students and prepare them for the real world will be like. There’s still a lot we can and are doing to change this, and some teachers have already implemented similar rules in their classrooms, which I personally think needs to be a widespread thing.
